You are invited to join the Lorn Family History Group

So 2010 was a bit quiet on the local genealogical front, but very busy in most people's lives.
What can we come up with in 2011 - for a start, here is a new group to chat about ideas and genealogical things
(in the meantime if you find anything interesting to share — add it here
news

The idea is to start with meetings to get to know who is doing what, work on each others problems, maybe find somewhere with wifi access for laptops, or a place with computers to use, so we can share the resources we each have found online, as well as bringing together what other research tools there are.

Once we have an idea what we are all researching, the depth of knowledge within the membership, which parts of the country / globe we are searching in, where the brick walls are and what our interests are in the wider social and political history surrounding our ancestors, then we can invite experts, speakers, etc.

There are already good local societies covering local Argyll history, like | Appin Historical Society and | Lorn Archaelogical and Historical Society, but there may be subjects missing.
We will have to see what interests the members already have, it would be good to have people helping with the genealogical issues, as well as the wider historical topics.

Experience shows from other online communities how valuable it is to have someone else's perspective on a problem you are working on, and its also really useful to help others, you always learn so much.
We have all collected resources, magazines, discs, fiche etc, which are bound to be useful to others.
Each of us must have something to share, even those just starting out have their own experience in work, life etc.

Any fellow addicts out there ???

Anyone who would like to know more details of a local group, should please get in touch with LFHG

This group is very much aimed at genealogists who are actually living in the North Argyll area, wherever their ancestors come from or ended up.
As one prospective member suggested "its a chance to get together with like minded people who won't glaze over when you start droning on".
From the enquries so far, its evident that we will cover most of the country, if not many of the continents, from the start, which is wonderful.
We also have a surprising depth of experience coming out of the local woodwork as well as welcoming newcomers to the hobby. What a joy!

In response to those who have been in touch about ancestors in the area, but who do not live close enough to join us in person we will not, initially, be able to offer a local history service - SO —- in anticipation of some disappointment and to offer a place where work can start on the local historical journey a new website has been created :-

| OldOban is another wiki - making it supremely easy for everyone to contribute their knowledge, images and information, wherever in the world they are, on whatever topic concerning the local area, and not have to wait for the new local group to catch up . It will have a forum for questions so knowledge from around the world can be shared.
For others interested in the wider county of Argyll there is also a fairly comprehensive collection of links at the | Argyll Genealogical Interests
Any useful sites that have been missed out would be gratefully received.
